Sense “steer, aim”: Dutch stevenen; derived from the noun ON stafn, stefni, OE stefn, ME stemme, MnE stem, Dutch steven, borrowed into German as Steven “prow.” The PG source is either the noun *stabnaz, derived from *stabaz, ON stafr, OE stæf, ME staf, MnE staff, stave, Dutch staf, German Stab, or else the noun *stamniz, Dutch stam, German Stamm “trunk, stem”; these roots have become confused also in English, but both may go back to the PIE root yielding e.g. MnE stand and Latin stāre. Source of ME stevenen “ascend.” Sense “summon”: PG *stemnijaną, OE stefnian 2. Sense “schedule”: OE stefnan 1, ME stevenen, Dutch bestemmen, German bestimmen “determine.” Variant stemna.
