Shares a root with the Latin adjective caelebs “unmarried.” Earlier 2sg imperative form lifi; Strong participial variant lifinn, used in the sense “alive,” reflecting class I strong PG *bilībaną and cognate with OE belīban I “be left over,” ME bilēven, Dutch blijven, German bleiben “remain.”
